Diana Dixon has a lot on her plate. Between rehearsing for a ballroom dance competition, juggling two jobs, dealing with her ex-boyfriend, and keeping up with her cheerleading commitments, she already has enough going on without adding a troublesome new neighbor to the list.
Unfortunately, that's exactly what happens when Shane Lindley, a gorgeous hockey player and notorious ladies' man, moves into her apartment building.
Diana immediately makes her position clear. Shane isn't allowed to throw parties in her apartment, he needs to stay away from her cheerleading teammates, and most importantly, he needs to leave her alone. As far as Diana is concerned, Shane is exactly the kind of guy she has no interest in.
Shane, however, has his own problems. He's tired of meaningless hookups and still dealing with the fallout from his long-term relationship ending. When his ex suddenly comes back into the picture, Shane impulsively tells her that he has a girlfriend.
There's only one problem.
He doesn't actually have a girlfriend.
So when Shane decides to pretend that Diana is the mystery woman he's dating, she is understandably furious. Yet Diana soon realizes that a fake relationship could actually help her deal with her own ex-boyfriend, who refuses to accept that their relationship is over.
The solution seems simple: they can pretend to date, help each other with their respective problems, and then go their separate ways when the charade is over.
But pretending to be together becomes much harder when the chemistry between them starts feeling very real.
Diana and Shane already know how to push each other's buttons. Their constant arguments turn into playful banter, and their rivalry gradually becomes something much more complicated. The more time they spend together, the more Diana begins to see that Shane is not simply the arrogant hockey player she assumed he was.
Behind his reputation is someone who genuinely wants a meaningful relationship and cares deeply about the people around him. Shane, meanwhile, discovers that Diana's toughness hides vulnerabilities she rarely allows anyone else to see.
Their fake relationship also becomes intertwined with Diana's ballroom dancing. When she needs a new dance partner, Shane unexpectedly steps into the role, giving them even more opportunities to spend time together and forcing them to confront the attraction they have been trying to ignore.
As their relationship develops, Diana begins realizing that being strong doesn't always mean handling everything alone. Shane challenges her to let other people into her life, while Diana encourages him to move beyond the casual relationships he once relied on.
But their pasts aren't something they can simply pretend away. Diana is dealing with an ex who continues to cause problems, while Shane has his own emotional baggage from his previous relationship. As their feelings deepen, the fake relationship becomes increasingly difficult to separate from what they actually feel.
What started as a convenient arrangement becomes something neither of them expected: a genuine connection built on friendship, trust, humor, attraction, and emotional vulnerability.
