Ellis has her senior year all planned out. Coming from New York City, she is focused on getting into Columbia University, studying journalism, and building the future she has always imagined for herself. The last thing she needs is for her carefully organized plans to fall apart.

Then her parents announce that they are separating.

Suddenly, Ellis finds herself leaving Manhattan with her mother and heading to Bramble Falls, Connecticut, where they will stay with her aunt and cousin. To Ellis, the picturesque small town could not have come at a worse time. She has goals to accomplish, applications to finish, and a future waiting for her back in New York.

But Bramble Falls has a way of getting under her skin.

The town is preparing for its beloved Falling Leaves Festival, a month-long celebration filled with everything autumn. Apple picking, pumpkin carving, corn mazes, seasonal treats, and community events become impossible for Ellis to avoid after her aunt ropes her into helping with the festivities.

Then there is Cooper Barnett.

Cooper was once Ellis's best friend and her first kiss. But years have changed them both. Now he is a local barista who has grown into a completely different version of himself, and instead of welcoming Ellis back into his life, he seems determined to keep his distance.

Unfortunately for Ellis, avoiding Cooper becomes nearly impossible.

The more involved she becomes with the festival, the more often their paths cross. Old memories resurface, unresolved feelings begin to emerge, and Ellis starts wondering whether the boy she remembers and the person standing in front of her might have more in common than she wants to admit.

What begins as an unwanted detour gradually becomes something much more meaningful. Ellis starts developing a genuine connection with Bramble Falls and the quirky, welcoming people who call it home. The town she initially viewed as an obstacle begins to feel like a place where she might actually belong.

But falling for a town is one thing. Figuring out what she wants from her future is another.

As her return to Manhattan is repeatedly delayed, Ellis finds herself caught between two very different lives. One represents the future she has carefully planned, while the other offers something she never realized she was missing. The choices she faces become increasingly personal as she begins questioning whether success is really about following the path everyone expects of her.

At the center of the story is Ellis and Cooper's second-chance romance. Their history gives their relationship an emotional foundation, while their time together in Bramble Falls creates plenty of awkward moments, banter, lingering feelings, and romantic tension. Their story is ultimately about whether two people who once knew each other so well can find their way back to one another after growing apart.

Misty Wilson fills the novel with cozy autumn atmosphere, small-town charm, family dynamics, friendship, romance, and the excitement and uncertainty of senior year. The result is a warm seasonal read that captures the feeling of crisp fall weather, coffee-shop conversations, colorful leaves, community festivals, and falling for someone when you least expect it.

Falling Like Leaves is a sweet and charming story about realizing that life does not always follow the plan you create for it. Sometimes the unexpected detour becomes the part of the journey you never knew you needed.
