Hazel Hart was once a successful romance novelist, but after a painful breakup, her writing career has completely stalled. She is suffering from serious writer's block, struggling to finish her next manuscript, and running out of chances with her publisher. With one final deadline hanging over her head, Hazel knows she needs a dramatic change if she wants to save her career.

Her solution is perhaps a little impulsive. Hazel buys a historic house in tiny Story Lake, Pennsylvania, without even seeing it first and leaves Manhattan behind. She hopes that escaping the city and immersing herself in a charming small-town community will help her rediscover her writing inspiration.

Unfortunately, Story Lake is not quite the picturesque little town Hazel imagined. Her new home is a disaster, complete with spiders and a raccoon problem, while the town itself is struggling after its biggest employer shuts down. To make matters even more complicated, Hazel's new property comes with a seat on the town council, forcing her directly into the middle of the community's problems and all of its colorful personalities.

Then Hazel meets Campbell Bishop, the tall, grumpy contractor who unexpectedly becomes one of the biggest sources of inspiration in her new life. Cam is exactly the kind of man Hazel could turn into a romance-novel hero, and when she hires him and his equally capable brothers to renovate her disaster of a house, keeping things strictly professional becomes increasingly difficult.

Hazel eventually comes up with a plan that seems perfectly logical to a romance writer: a fake date for research. If she can experience the kind of romantic chemistry she needs for her book, maybe the words will finally start flowing again. But as Hazel spends more time with Cam, the line between research and reality begins to disappear.

What starts as a convenient arrangement soon becomes something neither of them expected. Hazel is not only finding her writing inspiration again, she is beginning to build a real life in Story Lake. She becomes invested in the people around her, starts to care about the future of the struggling town, and discovers that her new community might be exactly what she needed.

Cam, however, has his own reasons for keeping love at a distance. Even as his connection with Hazel grows stronger, he struggles with the idea of a happily-ever-after. Hazel's arrival threatens to change more than just his routine, and the closer they become, the harder it becomes for him to hide behind his usual grumpy exterior.

As Hazel's new home begins to take shape, so does her new life. But with the town facing financial trouble, her career still hanging in the balance, and Cam questioning whether he can truly have the future Hazel wants, their romance is about to face challenges much bigger than drywall and renovation dust.
